Acupuncture for Hay Fever in London

Those of us who prefer our lives to be sun kissed by the long days of summer would do well to spare a thought for those who know the approach of warmer weather means the onslaught of another period of hay fever.

But acupuncture for hay fever gives every sufferer hope that this time they will be able to face pollen-rich air without the misery that comes from itchy, puffy eyes, constant sneezing and endlessly streaming eyes.

On its own, hay fever is hardly a serious condition, but it affects about 20 per cent of the population at some time in their lives and, at its worst, it can drive even the most outdoorsy people to seal themselves in the house with the doors and windows shut.

Acupuncture can be effective in the treatment of hay fever and its symptoms because it treats the individual as a whole, rather than the symptoms a patient might be presenting. This holistic approach is a fundamental principle of all ancient Chinese medicine.

At its simplest, hay fever is the result of pollen (and sometimes dust) inflaming the mucous membranes of the eyes and nose.

Most people with hay fever develop symptoms that are like those of a heavy cold, but the condition – or Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis, to give it its scientific name – can have more extreme symptoms, too.

At its worst, hay fever can also cause hoarseness, itching in the throat and headaches. So, it comes as no surprise to discover that irritability and insomnia can also be symptoms experienced by someone who suffers with the condition!

Hay fever can affect people at any age. Unlike childhood conditions such as eczema, which people generally outgrow, hay fever doesn’t always strike in childhood. It’s a mildly debilitating and always unpleasant condition that can suddenly appear whether you’re 5 or 50.

The beauty of acupuncture as a complementary therapy is that age is no barrier to its effectiveness.

As with most conditions we treat with acupuncture, the root cause of the issue is not often to be found in the parts of the body worst affected by hay fever – so when we perform the treatment, we don’t just concentrate on the nose and eyes.

In fact, the underlying cause of pollen, dust and some other allergies can often be attributed to imbalances in the kidneys – and so our treatments use state of the art technology combined with traditional ancient medicinal practices to identify and then treat the source of the problem rather than the just the symptoms.

We’ve successfully treated a number of people desperate to be rid of the curse of hay fever. If you’d like to say goodbye to itchy eyes, a runny nose and sneezing and face the summer without a sense of dread, why not come and talk to us to see how our London acupuncture clinic can help you enjoy life while the sun shines.
